Rancho Embarcadero, or Tecolote Canyon, (Spanish for OWL) as it is also known, is a wonderful rural neighborhood community in North Goleta of approximately 155 homes. Beautifully situated in the foothills just a mile from the beach, the Canyon runs North and South. The Entrance to the Canyon is proudly featured in bold black letters on a stucco and tile landmark. County roads meander past the Community Center, where planned events happen all year. The Community Center features a BBQ Center, large lawn area and park with children's playground. There's a horse riding arena and tack building, and 18+ acres appropriately named "Tecolote Meadows". Close by amenities include the Sandpiper Golf Course, Haskell's Beach, Ellwood Bluffs, Ritz-Carlton Bacara Resort.
Many of us "long timers" in the Canyon recall receiving a copy of Tecolote Canyon A History, by Norma Jean Roden, either as a newcomer when we purchased our real estate years ago or obtaining a copy from EMID. However it was received, we treasure our booklet as it is a part of our history of living here. The booklet tells the history from the early discoveries of the land and its inhabitants, through 12 chapters, including Life in Tecolote Canyon in the late 1800's and includes Native wildlife ad plant life. The booklet history ends in 1977. There has been much more to write about since 1977. If anyone is interested in helping to research and update history, please let us know! In addition, if we get enough interest in republishing the booklet, we can work on that project too!
The Embarcadero Municipal Improvement District is located in Tecolote Canyon in the western portion of Goleta Valley, Santa Barbara County. The District boundaries encompass approximately 1,200 acres. Rancho Embarcadero, the primary residential portion of the District service area, is a low density subdivision consisting of 177 acre lots. Also within District boundaries is a 900 acre avocado ranch, a 20 acre parcel which the District intends to maintain as parkland as a buffer against further development to the West, and the beachfront parcel currently the site of a resort hotel.
EMID was created by a special act of the State Legislature in 1960. Under the enabling legislation (Embarcadero Municipal Improvement District Act, Chapter 81, Statutes of 1960,
